ARTIST STATEMENT – MARK REYMENT
Art is what happens when I’m busy making plans!
What starts out as a simple idea becomes increasingly complex, I like to play with disorder and my work reflects degrees of disorder frozen in time.
I often give my work whimsical titles, usually based on whatever was rattling around in my head at the time,
It’s not the fall that kills you (financial pressures)
The worlds strangest married couple (a reflection on love)
A Berlin crisis (feeling under siege)
A man of letters (self-depreciation).
These are things from everyday life given expression in Boxes, clouds, cages, flagpoles, scaffold, factories and towers, what seems chaotic is not quite so! There is a certain amount of order, but there is always a point where I just stop and say that’s it!
I play with geometry but never use rulers and such, imperfection in each object affects the other, this is especially so with the cage device, it is both symbolic and very difficult to build without them warping, they often contain clouds, white clouds, dark clouds, they are built for thing’s impossible to contain.
The saw tooth roof factory is a reflection on masculinity, or my being a father or my father, of duty and obligation, it is sometimes employed as a purely aesthetic device, these buildings being built purely for functionality being re used as an aesthetic device,
This is getting complicated so I’ll stop now.
