● Drypoint Etching with Chine Collé Workshop with tutor Jane Power - to be held on Saturday September 4,  9–5pm. Cost $100 which includes morning tea and lunch and all materials. Drypoint is a printmaking technique of the intaglio family, in which an image is incised into a plate (or "matrix") with a hard-pointed "needle" of sharp metal or diamond point. Traditionally the plate was copper, but now acetate, zinc, or plexiglas are also commonly used. Like etching, drypoint is easier for an artist trained in drawing to master than engraving, as the technique of using the needle is closer to using a pencil than the engraver's burin. Full description at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DrypointChine-collé is a special technique in printmaking in which the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, which pulls finer details off the plate. Another purpose is to provide a background color behind the image that is different from the surrounding backing sheet. Full description at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chine-coll%C3%A9

Exhibition August 21 to October 3, opening Friday August 20, 6.30pm. ● Best Served Cold - Vivienne Shark LeWitt The paintings of Vivienne Shark LeWitt are often wistful and lyrical in approach, but withhold a darker edge. Essential  From the Cbus Collection of Australian Art.  until 5 September. The Cbus Collection of Australian Art comprises more than 300 works, dating from the mid 1800s to the present day. Cbus is the superannuation fund for the construction and building industry and represents hundreds of thousands of workers. The fund has been investing in Australian art since the late 1980s. Essential presents a selection of works from artists who have re-shaped their visual worlds to extract an underlying essence for expressive purposes. Artists include John Passmore, Hilarie Mais, Robert Hunter, Kenneth Whisson and Mary Cecil Allen who provide insightful interpretations of literal objects and the natural world pared down to abstract form.

● ● Rosalind Atkins 24 July - 19 September. The falling leaf is a whisper to the living - English proverb. For many years the engraving of images of trees on finely grained blocks of wood has made up the dominant part of Rosalind’s art practice. The subjects vary, from the trees she is familiar with, to the ones she chances upon. Often others will lead her to a particular tree because her work has triggered a memory or association. In all the years Rosalind has been taking notice of trees she never ceases to be amazed by them. They are fundamental to our well being. The health of our forests impacts on the planet, the tree we pass by the gate witnesses the comings and goings of our lives.

The Poetics of Geometry - Caroline Durre Until 29 August Caroline Durré makes spectacular large-scale drawings and paintings of strange three-dimensional shapes. These shapes, like extraordinary imaginary worlds, seem to float in space. Some of Durré’s inspirations are the Baroque formal garden and its arabesque parterres, historical fortifications, architecture and ceiling painting. The poetics of geometry will invite you to explore the artist’s imaginative use of symmetry and decoration, a vision that will entrance and hypnotise. Caroline Durré will also be installing a large-scale wall painting, in glowing fluorescent colours, in the Gallery courtyard for the duration of the exhibition. Symbols of Construction - Sue Jarvis International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery. 24 July - 22 August Construction sites are the source of inspiration for Sue Jarvis’s recent oils on canvas. Sue investigates the everyday building materials and clothing items that become universally recognisable symbols - hard hats, fluorescent clothing, red and white tape. In capturing the transient nature of a moment in the life of a building in painted colour, shape and pattern, Sue gives symbolic meaning to these objects.Other Side Art: Trevor Nickolls. A survey of painting and drawings 1972 – 2007. A NETS Victoria touring exhibition developed by the Ian Potter Museum of Art, The University of Melbourne . 24 July - 19 September Trevor Nickolls is a senior indigenous artist and seminal figure in Australian contemporary art. His artworks are powerful figurative and symbolic explorations of alienation and the urban landscape, and have informed many of the critical, intellectual and aesthetic positions vital to questions of identity and Aboriginality in Australia.

● The Weight of Stone - Frank Mesaric - 25 September - 21 November - Frank Mesaric’s recent body of work takes as its starting point references to things around us and highlights the characteristics in them that are in fact universal, by being attached to some of the meanings and the messages of paintings appropriated from the past. An empty hospital bed placed in a darkened corridor paired with Rembrandt’s ‘The Anatomy Lesson’ speaks of our inescapable mortality as well as our misguided or arrogant belief that science has the capacity to cure all.

● Water and Light - Lesley Keevers - International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery - 2 October - 31 October - Lesley Keevers paintings are inspired by the earth’s biosphere. Water is the main focus in this body of work as a symbol of life, rejuvenation and the strength in earth’s natural elements. Keevers focus is on line, atmospheric tones and movement where forms continuously change and shift in dynamic. She uses an encaustic process of painting that is highly textured with rich pigments and beeswax that creates shifting reflections and refracted light. ▪ Opening hours: Mon to Fri 10am to 5pm, Sat & Sun 11am to 4pm. Closed public holidays.  138 Commercial Rd, Morwell 3840. Ph 5128 5700. www.latroberegionalgallery.com    email: lrg@latrobe.vic.gov.au
