The next exhibition (#38 for Gecko
Studio Gallery) is titled ‘Assemblage 15’ but, as happened with our ‘Pattern
12’ exhibition which ended up with 13 artists, a certain artistic license means
there are 16 artists involved in this exhibition. Oh well, there are more
important things in the world to worry about.
What is
assemblage? Here is one definition and explanation - Assemblage - in
art, work produced by the incorporation of everyday objects into the
composition. Although each non-art object, such as a piece of rope or
newspaper, acquires aesthetic or symbolic meanings within the context of the
whole work, it may retain something of its original identity. The term
assemblage, as coined by the artist Jean Dubuffet in the 1950s, may refer to both
planar and three-dimensional constructions. Although artworks composed from a
variety of materials are common to many cultures, assemblage refers to a
particular form that developed out of intellectual and artistic movements at
the beginning of the 20th century. The practice began about
1911–12 with the Cubist collages of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and sculptural assemblages
by Futurists such as Umberto Boccioni and Filippo Tommaso
Marinetti. One of the earliest examples is Picasso’s “Still Life with Chair Caning” (1911–12), in which a piece
of oilcloth with an imitation chair caning design was pasted onto the painting,
and a rope was used to frame the picture. Subsequent art movements such as Dada and Surrealism explored the possibilities of
assemblage. Marcel Duchamp, for instance, created
“ready-mades” and “found objects” from industrial and natural objects; he
elevated them into the realm of art simply by adding an inscription or by
including them in an exhibition. Artists of the mid-20th century working in
assemblage included Louise Nevelson and Robert Rauschenburg.
www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/39194/assemblage
The artists involved in Assemblage
15 are….
Sian Adnam(Cape Woolami), Deb Le Cerf (Cape Patterson), Peter Cole (Venus Bay), Bridget Crowe (Fish Creek), Grant Flather (Yanakie), Sue Gilford (Agnes), Mandy Gunn (Tarwin Lower), Suellen Lee(Binginwarri), Andrew McPherson (Fish Creek), Ann Parry (Foster North), Jane Power (Fish Creek), Abigail van Rooyen (Waratah North), Kerry Spokes (Fish Creek), Annie Stark (Fish Creek), Rachel Warren (Outrim), Helen Wilkinson (Yanakie).
Some of the participants are well
known for their artworks featuring assemblage or collage (essentially
interchangeable terms or at least very similar processes) whereas for others it
will be a challenge to move away from their trademark, tried and true mediums.
So, we have some idea of what to expect from some of the artists and absolutely
no idea of what we will get from others. Therein lies the fun and allure of
this type of exhibition where artists are set a challenge and produce works
that either allow them to show what they can do in their preferred medium or
allow them to show their inherent abilities even when working in unusual
mediums. ‘Pattern 12’ exhibition in 2009, ‘Assemblage 15’ in 2010 – Kerry and I
will have to dream up something out of the box for our group exhibition for
2011.
CV’s and artist
statements will be available for all the artists when the exhibition opens.
The image on the
invitation is a work from the exhibition by Mandy Gunn.

The
combined opening of Making a Mark –
the exhibition of decorated bookmarks at the Ride the Wild Goat Gallery and Catherine
Wheeler’s Primordium exhibition at Gecko
Studio Gallery was a great success with large crowds at both opening and
good sales. The sale of bookmarks at RTWG at 3pm was a bit like opening the
doors at Myers for a spring sale. I waited for the headlines in the local
papers regarding an art riot in Fish Creek but alas, it didn’t eventuate.
v
Another big
crowd was at the opening of the Life
Aquatic exhibition at Stockyard
Gallery in Foster. Congratulations to Andrew
McPherson (of Ride the Wild Goat Gallery) for winning the Best in Show/Best
Interpretation of Theme award for his stunning metal etching of a coastal
landscape. Other winners – Best Two Dimensional entry – Jan Gallacher (Foster); Best Three Dimensional entry – Pam Donellan (Mt Best); Gary Miles
Choice – Doug Taylor (Foster);
Janine Riches Choice Sharn Downing (Foster);
Sharon Andersons Choice – Pat Butinar (Foster);
Craig Stubbings Choice – June Riviere (Morwell);
Best Secondary Student work – Kierra
Jacobsen; Best Junior work – Evan
McPherson (yes – father & son winning awards in the same art show,
there should be more of it!); High Commendation – Shaun Van Der Steen and Chloe
Cousins.
v
Congratulations
to Shaelah Gringhuis, recipient of
the South Gippsland Secondary College Year 12 art encouragement award, funded
by Gecko Studio Gallery. The award allows Shaelah to select art materials she
will need when she goes on to study graphic design at Deakin University.
v
Note – I will endeavour to
include more news in future newsletters so I am happy to receive news about art
events from around the district although I cannot promise to include everything
sent to me, it all depends on available space.

2008 Jacaranda Acquisitive
Drawing Award (JADA) A Grafton Regional Gallery touring exhibition, 16 January - 14 March. The 2008 Jacaranda Acquisition Drawing Award or
JADA, showcases 48 contemporary drawings from every state and territory in
Australia, making JADA a truly national drawing exhibition. The 2008 JADA major
prize was awarded to John Philippides for his drawing entitled Portrait 2. The
work is a portrait of the artist’s mother who has been the subject of many of
John’s works. The portrait is the artist’s tribute to the enduring mystery of
the human presence. Past major acquisitions include drawings from Thomas
Spence, Godwin Bradbeer, Michael Zavros, Noel McKenna and Maria Kontis.
Women of the World Images of Women From the Cbus Collection
of Australian Art 14
November - 21 February. The Cbus Collection of
Australian Art comprises more than three hundred artworks, dating from the mid
1800s to the present day. Cbus is the superannuation fund for the construction
and building industry and represents hundreds of thousands of workers. The fund
has been investing in Australian art since the late 1980s. Women
of the World presents a sumptuous
range of portraits and studies of women from the Collection, including works by
Sidney Nolan, Richard Larter, Arthur Boyd, John Brack, Juan Davila, George
Baldessin and Janet Dawson. Evocative landscapes, mothers, dancers and everyday
interiors form the backdrop to an investigation of women and reflect the
diversity and challenges of representing the female form.
Phil Henshall -
Perspectives on the Pilbara An International Power Hazelwood Community
Access Gallery exhibition 16 January - 14 February. Inspired
by his visits to the Pilbara region, Phil Henshall provides a unique view of
these dramatic landscapes. He explores the potential of composition and
provides fresh aspects for us to enjoy the detailed and colourful discoveries
of his travels. A selection of works presenting his response to Black Saturday
will be included in the exhibition.
Tandeera - Resting
Place - Eileen Harrison, Frances Harrison and Jenny Mullett (Gunnai/Kurnai
women) in collaboration with projection artist Ian de Gruchy. 23 January - 14 March. Tandeera
is a Gunnai/Kurnai word meaning place of rest and together the artists have
meditated on the themes of resting and healing post-Apology to create an
exhibition space that promises to soothe the soul. Drawing on the women’s
cultural knowledge and family art traditions as well as Ian de Gruchy’s
innovative and inspiring projection techniques, the installation projects a
unique and womanly space that is healing, magical and restful.
John Meade - Objects
to live by - A NETS Victoria
touring exhibition curated by Zara Stanhope 6 February - 4 April. John Meade is an established Melbourne sculptor
who has been exhibiting since the early 1990s. This exhibition will be the
first to give an overview of his career in detail. Meade’s work emerges from a
creative engagement with ideas and materials. Scale is a concerning feature and
the sculptures presented in the exhibition will range from large to small. His
willingness to experiment with materials will be conveyed in works created from
cast metal, polymer resin composites, concrete and fabric spanning from 1996 to
the present.
